Bank – Craft Workshops Assistant

The Lantern Community is home to 53 resident Companions (adults with diverse abilities) and more than 20 Day placements from the local area. We offer meaningful day opportunities during the week, across our 9 Workshops including Art, Craft, Weavery and Pottery.

About the role:

To support the holistic development of adults with diverse learning abilities, record and celebrate their journey to fulfil their full potential.

To provide and facilitate a variety of Craft activities and experiences to Companions (residents) in a workshop setting. Ensuring the projects offered are supporting the needs of the individual as well as ensuring the stability of the group.

To work alongside Companions (residents) in the Lantern Community workshops, directing, supporting and facilitating the tasks that need to be done, whilst ensuring that the Companions are involved in meaningful work as part of the team.

Main responsibilities of the role are:

  • To assist the Workshop Team Leader/s to prepare workshop

  • To take guidance from the Workshop Team Leaders / or from the Assistant Team Leader in the workshop, in the Team Leaders absence who will communicate tasks that need to be done.

  • Communicating effectively and enabling Companions to make informed choices regarding their work and to maximize their role as members of the team.

 About you:

  • Flexible in your working hours and able to cover at short notice.

  • A warm, person-centred approach with the ability to engage in a positive way with people with diverse learning abilities.

  • Experience of providing support to people with learning disabilities, including Autism or other support needs.

  • Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work positively as part of a team in a unique environment.

  • Good written communication skills, with an ability to contribute to a record keeping system.

Education:

  • A-Level or equivalent (preferred)

  • Craft Qualification (preferred)

  • Portfolio required

Experience:

  • Social care: 2 years (preferred)

  • Craft work: 2 years (preferred) 

  • Satisfactory References

You will also be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.

Retail Services Support

16 hours per week

09:30 am to 13.30 pm

About the role:

To provide customer service in the shop and work alongside with the Companions (residents) maintaining, developing and offering support to the Companions in the retail services workshop, ensuring they are involved in meaningful work as part of the team

Main responsibilities of the role are:

  • To support mainly the shop and all internal and external customers.

  • Communicating effectively and enabling Companions (residents) to make informed choices regarding their work and to maximize their role as members of the team.

  • You may also be required to work and support in the Bakery and Café as required

  • Ensure the Shop and Café are fully stocked with an accurate record of products displayed, labelled, clearly showing price and ingredients.

 About you:

  • A warm, person centered approach and ability to positively engage with people with diverse learning abilities.

  • Good level of stamina as this is role includes a lot of standing and elements of physical work.

  • Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work positively as part of a team in a fast paced environment.

  • Experience of providing support to people with learning disabilities, including Autism or other support needs.

  • Good written communication skills, with an ability to contribute to a record keeping system.

  • Satisfactory References and DBS

Casual Local Volunteering at the Lantern

A number of adults who can spare either a few hours, individual days, or several days per week on a causal basis who can give their time to a whole range of activities that may include gardening, handcrafts, printing, transport and tutoring. All our volunteers are considered members of the Community Their individual contribution is highly valued and appreciated. (Please note that casual volunteering is not the same as our co-worker volunteering. Accommodation is not provided, and casual volunteers do not live in the Lantern Community).

All members of the Community acknowledge the valuable life experience and skills that each volunteer offers, along with loyalty, friendship and the commitment required to freely give of personal time.

The Lantern Community recognises that volunteering must benefit the individual as well as ourselves, and aims to provide an environment that is inclusive, stimulating, friendly and supportive. We wish to continually maintain and develop a creative and mutually beneficial relationship between volunteers and the Community, recognising that volunteers are a positive force in describing our work and engendering support and understanding in the wider community.

Please also be aware that unfortunately we cannot accept the offer of regular volunteer work in our workshops from parents or those who have direct responsibility to companions living here. However we do have other opportunities for you to support the community in other ways.

We are currently searching for new trustees to join our charity, we would welcome anyone with a Building/ Estates background, Human Resources or with Health and Social Care or any other field of expertise you could bring.

The Lantern Community employs approximately 100 people who are engaged in a variety of work, covering areas such as finance, administration, workshops, Companion and house support. The skills that they bring and the commitment they make are valued by all, as well as the positive contribution through social interaction.
